Confirming his judgment, they had seen during the first two days only afew peon herders, who scampered like rabbits at their approach. Butwhile it made for safety, the course he had laid out also carried themaway from water, the first necessity of desert travel.

When the novel opens, Diana’s twin brother, David, a widower in his mid-sixties, is looking back on his life. As memories swamp him, he decides to take a critical step: to beg for his sister’s forgiveness. Diana has never met David’s two daughters. An estranged brother and sister reconnect in this moving novel from perhaps the most significant lesbian fiction writer of the 20th century (Katherine V. Forrest, author of Curious Wine). Annika Williams left teaching to help raise her teenagers, Jarren and Lexi, and she hasn't regretted it. Along with her loving, sensitive husband Zeb, Annika and her family are living the good life in Lincoln, Nebraska.

But life has more in store for Annika when her pastor, Reverend Williams, introduces her to Carl, a homeless eleven-year-old boy with a sketchy past. Moved by his love of children and a desire to save the boy from the streets, Reverend Williams convinces a reluctant Annika to adopt Carl.

Perhaps motivated by a good heart or some agency quota, Carl's caseworker, Rose, tells Annika that children like Carl come with something a little extra and would bring another dimension to their family. Unfortunately, it doesn't take long before Annika figures out what Rose meant. Not only is Carl emotionally unstable, but his altercations with the police and his constant troublemaking exhaust Annika and make it incredibly difficult for her to maintain her sanity.

Yet Annika knows God is working through it all. Now, if He'll just give her the patience and strength to hold on to this little boy who has completely captured her heart...

A heartwarming, touching tale, The Boarder shows the amazing healing power of love.

WORTH THE READ TO UNDERSTAND AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ABOUT RAD.I LIKED THE MOVIE ON DVD MUCH BETTER HONESTLY.ALSO,IT IS BASED ON TRUE STORIES FROM FAMILIES WITH RAD CHILDREN,BUT I DON'T LIKE NOVELS AS MUCH AS MEMOIRS ON SUBJECTS LIKE THIS.HOWEVER,IT DOESN'T HURT TO READ IT.

I have been waiting for this book to come out and was not disappointed. This book tells a true story that needs to be told!! I swear Jane E Ryan was hiding in the corners of my house when she wrote this book. She tells the story of a Reactive Attachment Disordered child, and how it affects the family who takes the child in to raise. I am raising 2 Reactive Attachment Disordered children, and this book was so awesome to read! I read it in less than 2 days! I cannot wait for the film to come out. Visit [...] thank you to Jane E Ryan!!!

Jane Ryan's, "The Boarder", addresses the dilemmas surrounding families living with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). Carl, a disruptive homeless 11-year-old is adopted by the Williams family and symptoms of RAD emerge immediately, creating dysfunction never before experienced in the Rev. Williams' stable family. The story of Carl's journey through RAD is disturbing but the author's skill in incorporating her personal experiences and endless research delivers a message of hope. By combining expertise of a child psychologist (Dr. Elizabeth Logan), two local Police Officers (Sullivan and Newell), Carl's Caseworker (Rose) and the entire Williams family (Zeb, Annika, Jarren and Lexi), Ryan has produced a heart-rendering, educational "must read" for Reactive Attachment Disorder victims.

The Border by Jane E Ryan
The story was just what I expected. Not particularly well written but very interesting.

The author promotes "Attachment Therapy," its highly authoritarian parenting methods, and an unrecognized, catch-all diagnosis which is conflated with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD).

Attachment Therapy (aka Rage Reduction, Holding Therapy, Compression Therapy, etc.) is considered child abuse. See 2006 APSAC report: [...]

But who needs national mental health professional organizations to tell you what is *prima facie* torture?

See for yourself what Attachment Therapy looks like in clips from training tapes: [...] Take special note of the first clip made at the Attachment Center at Evergreen (Colorado) because Jane Ryan speaks well of this treatment center and its founder, the infamous Foster Cline ([...]).

Attachment Therapy parenting methods are based on isolation, humiliation, deprivation, excessive chores and exercises, and manipulation of children through food. They have been associated with high profile criminal child abuse and death cases.

The diagnosis that Ryan calls "RAD" is more properly called "Attachment Disorder" (AD), which is very different than RAD. AD is a bogus diagnosis used by Attachment Therapists. RAD, the recognized diagnosis is defined in the "DSM-IV" and is characterized by a child being either very withdrawn or overly friendly with unfamiliar people. There are no violent or aggressive or destructive features to RAD. The AD diagnosis demonizes children to the extent that even good behavior is interpreted as the child "stalking his prey." Proponents of Attachment Therapy, like Jane Ryan, like to confuse AD with RAD, perhaps because RAD qualifies for some insurance reimbursement; AD does not.

Jane Ryan's books (and her film) seek to sustain the decades-long beatification of adoptive parents and "therapists" who justify the horrific abuse of adopted children via Attachment Therapy.
