Of the first 8 novels in the Butch Karp series, of which I've read 7 of them, this is by far my least favorite. Part of my dislike for this particular novel clearly comes from my distaste for one of the 2 major plot lines. Marlene Ciampi, who is Butch Karp's wife and a former ADA & head of the Rape Bureau, has demonstrated in the past how a very skilled lawyer can, by and large in the majority of cases, use her wits & in-depth knowledge of the admittedly flawed system to put the bad guys away without resorting to violence and without abandoning the law she has sworn to uphold. Was she a rebel? Absolutely! Was she known to bend a few rules & even tell outright lies on occasion? Absolutely yes! But in "Falsely Accused," she has totally lost her way and largely abandoned using the legal system to seek justice for her victims and embraces the morally questionable philosophy of "the end justifies the means." Even worse, she's only slightly & temporarily troubled when her 7 year old daughter Lucy engages in somewhat similar behavior. In this novel, Tannenbaum has strayed much too far afield from the original Marlene: sufficiently quirky, offbeat & foul-mouthed sexually-liberated woman, who expressed her rebellion against society's expectations for women at that time in other ways without veering too far off the course as a dedicated ADA & honorable officer of the court. In this book, she not only gravely endangers herself & her family, she crosses the line into vigilanteism. I will go back to read #3, which is an early one that I missed; but I will likely pass on any others like this one in the series. Instead, I will read some of the other standalone mysteries written by Tannenbaum, whose writing is superb & whose novels are so much better than many contemporary best sellers of this genre.

Tanenbaum returns with Karp and Ciampi, now formerly of the NY DA's office. After the stint on Kennedy assassination and the detour through Washington DC they are back in New York. Butch is with a 'gray shoe' law firm, heavy on torts and short on trials. But Butch is the trial expert and the constant threat that causes cases to be settled. Marlene is home with Lucy enjoying the good life Karp is now able to afford.

The Chief Medical Examiner of NY is summarily dismissed for incompetence. Murray Selig hires Butch to represent him in a civil suit against the city and Karp sees the dirty hand prints of District Attorney Sanford Bloom all over the case.

At the same time Marlene is tired of the hausfrau role and decides to become a P.I. after helping another mom with a domestic stalker. Harry Bello turns in his shield and joins Marlene in the new venture.

Of course the separate lives of Karp and Ciampi dovetail to a conclusion. This installment advances the personal side of the story as well and Lucy becomes a larger part of the story.

Well written and a page turner. Highly recommend and can't wait to start the next book.

Butch and Marlene are an odd couple - with very different outlooks on life. But each appreciates and supports the other -sometimes overtly and sometimes covertly. If you haven't read any of the many books showcasing Butch and Marlene, I suggest you go on line and then read them in the order written. There is tremendous changes in their lives as the books go on. I think they will become favorites. ... And if you know a District Attorney, a U.S. Attorney or just a criminal lawyer - recommend that they read them as well.

Robert Tanenbaum writes another great read. I love the way he develops the story, interweaving a case for Butch, that may involve Marlene and the family. And the family life that he has created for Marlene and Butch!

Mr Tanenbaum can take a topic, add a criminal element to it and make your heart beat faster as you realize how easy it would be to happen in your own world.

Each book he writes gives you more information, keeps you entertained and pushes you to keep turning the pages, until finally, the last page is read, and you have to wait until the next book comes along for continuing updates.

And I am looking forward to the next one, always!

Once again our fearless and morally incorruptible team pursues truth, justice, and barely steps over the line doing it. Supported by Harry, Sweetie and Lucy, bad people pay for their sins while we get titillated by Marlene's inner wars and sense of righteousness. Good read and another good story populated by good characters we like.

MEGA FREEDY

I Love Robert Tanenbaum's Karp & Ciampi series. He's always so serious and Marleen is just so refreshing !!! She handles work , home and taking care of her man with so much passion. And Karp loves her for who she is! I would recommend this series for anyone who wants a mystery and laughs to go along with an enjoyable story line.

He gets it. Robert Tanenbaum is fun to read and his stories are always great. This is no exception.
