Haunted by a series of horrifying and violent episodes in their past, Grace McBride and the oddball crew of her software company, Monkeewrench, create a computer game where the killer is always caught, where the good guys always win. But their game becomes a nightmare when someone starts duplicating the fictional murders in real life, down to the last detail. By the time the police realize what's happening, three people are dead, and with seventeen more murder scenarios available online, there are seventeen more potential victims. While the authorities scramble to find the killer in a city paralyzed by fear, the Monkeewrench staff are playing their own game, analyzing victim profiles in a frantic attempt to discover the murderer's next target. In a thriller populated by characters both hilarious and heartbreaking, a rural Wisconsin sheriff, two Minneapolis police detectives, and Grace's gang are caught in a web of decades-old secrets that could get them all killed.

In the back of this novel there is a question and answer session with the mother and daughter team who write this series of novels. From reading that I realized they have pretty defined segments which each woman is responsible for writing. The very good thing is that even knowing that information the novel flowed so well from one author to another. These two women match each other so well in style and thinking that having them be team writers definitely does not make the final work suffer at all. Monkeewrench is the first novel in this series, but I began with Off the Grid: A Monkeewrench Novel. I enjoyed that one so much that I decided to go back to the beginning and read the previous books in order. I like the humor injected into the stories. These books deal with some heavy subject matter and that little touch of levity, irony or sarcasm keeps the characters in the realm of reality and, for me, it helps to humanize them while they are dealing with such dark and violent situations.

Monkeewrench Software is almost ready to launch their new computer game where players look for clues to help them solve the murders of a serial killer. Each clue must be solved before the player can move on to the next level, the next murder. How do you get into the mind of a serial killer to solve these cases? Well, the game hasn't even been released for sale yet when suddenly this game is being played out in real life. The police have to find out the background of the designers of this game plus investigate the scene of each very real crime which is following the script down to the tiniest of clues. So how is the crime in Wisconsin tied to the murders in Minneapolis?

As a debut novel this one didn't stumble anywhere for me. I expect the characters in a novel to be larger than life and that is what I found here. So how much fun would it be to read a novel where everything was portrayed exactly the way it would happen in a real life crime? Not very exciting, that's for sure. This had just the right touches of humor and humanity along with a chance for the reader to work alongside the characters so everybody worked to solve the multiple crimes. Since the book was originally released in 2003 or 2004, some of the computer techniques might have become dated. That will matter to someone who is familiar with that technology, but I am not in that group so I had no problems with that aspect of the book. I enjoyed it a whole heck of a lot and am definitely ready to move on to Live Bait. There are lots of potential romantic relationships left unresolved in this one and I want to see how the characters progress in the next story. The romance is not the major focus of the novel, I wouldn't want it to be since I'm reading a crime related novel and I want more attention paid to that, but watching the characters grow because of interactions with someone was well written and gave an added dimension to the characters involved and those who were their friends and co-workers.

My sister told me about the Tracy series because I liked the John Sanford novels (being based in Minnesota and all. And her recommendation was on the mark. Quirky characters, lots of plot twists, some nice relationship building. The series as a whole is pretty fast moving, characters develop and become...well, characters! Good reads!!

I read this book as part of a mystery book club. Frankly, I might not have picked it up otherwise-BUT I AM SO GLAD I DID!!! I found it immediately compelling and it is now my intent to pick up every book these authors have written and that was the sentiment of many if not all of the other book club members as well! We had quite a lively discussion but the consensus was that we loved the character development and the story development. Amazing first book for these authors. Don't worry about the computer aspect--it does not get bogged down in computer jargon or technicalities. The story is fresh, it is inventive and it well provide unexpected twists and turns from the very start. So, to sum up--I LOVED THIS BOOK.

It is not often that I find a series that after reading the first I decide I have to own the whole series. The Monkeewrench series is one. The characters are well fleshed out and interesting. The mystery itself kept me guessing till the end. I can’t recommend it high enough.

If you read only one mystery/thriller by a new author this year, make "Monkeewrench" your choice. The plot and characters sizzle and the authors (mother-daughter team of PJ and Tracy Lambrecht) have set the thriller in Minneapolis/St.Paul-Wisconsin, one of my favorite areas, and the stomping grounds of Lucas Davenport of the "Prey" series.
For new authors, the team is excellent at weaving multiple plotlines together, and the team of 5 software developers that is at risk, and who have created risk for others, is an intriguing and slightly comic group (that apparently will be back for at least 2 sequels). Monkeewrench has gotten a lot of critical praise, some of it over-the-top, when comparing its comic touch to that of Evanovich. Make no mistake, this is a dead serious thriller, whose writers have a light and humorous way with words and descriptions. They don't populate the book with cartoon characters (no offense to Evanovich, I love her work). Here's a sample of the kind of descriptive turn that grabs your senses while you work through the plot:
"...the room was an olfactory museum of hundreds of meetings just like this one. Fast food, sweat, and the now-forbidden cigarette smoke -- all these smells and more seeped from the plaster walls and rose from the uneven waves of the warped wooden floor. "
You'll enjoy cops Magozzi, a Mpls. detective and his soft-hearted partner, Gino Rolseth, as well as Wisconsin sheriff Mike Halloran. Mostly though, you'll be annoyed at the sleep you miss, since Monkeewrench is one of those books you can't put down once you start. Plot twists and turns are exciting, and while the eventual discovery of the killer's identity is a little surreal, it makes for a great whodunit.
Looking forward to more from this writing team; their debut was spectacular!!!
