Benedict Allen's anthology of human exploration presents the words of those who, through the centuries, have set off into the "unknown" and returned - sometimes half-dead - to bring this "unknown" back to their people. This volume brings together Vikings and cosmonauts, conquistadors and botanists.

Benedict Allen polled contemporary explorers whenever he came across them during his own adventures over the past 20 or so years. Robin Hanbury-Tenison told him: "A traveller simply records information about some far-off world, and reports back; but an explorer changes the world.

I placed the explorers side by side, through the ages, within certain habitats. So in the Forest section, we see missionaries, conquistadores and anthologists side by side with their differing agendas. Sometimes the habitats work to change the explorer in question, other times the habitat itself is changed. Proud patron of: The Tony Trust.

Allen usefully makes the distinction between explorers who genuinely go into the unknown and travellers who report back freshly from the familiar, before ignoring it so that he can include seductive excerpts from writers like Chatwin and Sara Wheeler. A more rigorous application of his own principles might have paid off in a book that weighs in at 800 pages (not one for the knapsack). This would be fine, given that Shipton was an accomplished writer and Nanda Devi the most romantic and elusive of summits. But Shipton never climbed it.

If you like to escape then this is a great book. Easily jump into my top five of ALL time. I have gifted many of these. I have also read about 15 other books that this book references. A wonderful find.

I really like this book and the more I read it the more I like it . It reads like a story but actually is real people and real history , I learned so much from it which otherwise I will never know where to find it .. Highly recommended .

Accurate description and speedy service.

I have loaned mine out, and sent one to a friend. Lots of gripping reading here; even if you're familiar with some of the accounts. My only gripe is the small print.
