A study by Scholastic points to ways that parents can encourage kids to read for fu. Of course, children who love to read are generally immersed in households with lots of books and parents who like to read. So while parents who read to their children later in elementary school may encourage those children to become frequent readers on their own, such behavior can also result from a whole constellation of other things that goes on in those families, said Timothy Shanahan, professor emeritus of urban education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a past president of the International.

My favorite book when I was young was Timothy Titus Buttery Jill. I was happy to find it again!

This is a childhood favorite of mine. However, the one I grew up with is the one pictured here--a yellow fabric cover. The one I received was a cheesy library version, not in great shape. I knew it wasn't new, but it's pretty shabby. The cover is a cheesy vinyl blue and whatever-color. The only saving grace is that the text and drawings inside are identical to the book I know. I'm disappointed that it doesn't look like the one pictured. The book was a childhood treasure. And then, I received an "alien" book. Sigh. :(

The book is a collection of short stories and poems for children, written years ago obviously, but whose themes are relatively untouched by time.

Many of the stories deal with issues common to children of a certain age, using language they can relate to and without being too heavy-handed with the teachable moments. The cumulative effect reminds me a bit of Mr. Rogers. One story deals with the too-small-for-this, too-big-for-that moments in childhood, another with moving and the process of becoming accustomed to a new place and all the change in routine that involves. Others talk about everyday things, like taking baths, the feel of new shoes, the comfort of old ones, learning to whistle, and the delightful squishiness of mud. Poems interspersed with the stories keep the pacing of the collection interesting while exposing your child to the idea that poems can be very short-just enough to capture a fleet-footed thought, or long enough to tell a whole story.

Scattered throughout the book are simple black and white illustrations, comforting and nostalgic all at once.

I have been looking for the stories in this book for years, but could not remember the book title. Happily, the internet allows research of all sorts and I was very, very happy to have found this. The book was in the condition advertised and arrived on time. I am very, very happy to have this piece of my childhood back!
