So, does Sam Eastland manage to make the book tense and exciting?

So, does Sam Eastland manage to make the book tense and exciting? Yes, he most certainly does. His Soviet Union, even given that most of this happens in the half-frozen Siberian Gulags, isn't quite as bleak and mind-stunningly without hope, as Tom Rob Smith's Soviet Union, though pretty close.

A friend suggested the Inspector Pekkala series of books to me. I read the first one "Eye of the Red Tsar" and gave it 5 stars, the second was slightly disappointing (Shadow Pass) in that I did not feel it lived up to the level set by the first novel in the series. The author has regained his stride and this book gets 5 stars.

We continue to follow the exploits of Inspector Pekkala, who had been a special investigator for the Tsar and now continues those duties for Stalin. This book is set in the period right before the second World War. Inspector Pekkala is sent back to Siberia to the camp where he had been a prisoner in the first book, to investigate a murder - but to really track down the missing part of the Tsar's gold reserve. The author continues to develop his current story line with recalled episodes (flashbacks) from the various characters in his books. This style takes a little getting used to, but seems to flesh out his characters.

This is one of those sets of books that needs to be read in order for it to make sense. When you order -- be careful several of the books were published in the UK with different titles and both are available her in the US - so care is needed to make sure you don't buy a book you already have read.

Sam Eastland has portrayed a very interesting character in Pekkala, who has such a dangerous job as a policeman and now Stalin the paranoid leader of Russia is sending him on very dangerous missions, risking his life even. If the story doesn't grab me and the characters are weak I stop after 50 pages. Even though the stories are before World War two I found them gripping. Try and read them in the order they were written as the books are historical so read them in sequence. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Another superb outing for Pekkala. These characters really grow on you over time.
