My grammar book says sentence 1 means 'when I walked into the apartment she was in the middle of. singing in the shower' (OK) while sentence 2 aplies means or implies 'I heard the the song from the beginning to the end'. Could have been many songs and not just one song "from beginning to end". And it's just a general reference to the singer's performance.
