Pastes, according to Antique Paste Jewellery by Malcolm David Samuel Lewis, is glass which has been cut .

Pastes, according to Antique Paste Jewellery by Malcolm David Samuel Lewis, is glass which has been cut into gem-like forms. They were used extensively from the 1700s to the early 1900s and were a desired material in themselves, not a replacement for diamonds and gem stones. According to Antique Paste Jewellery, paste was only made from circa 1700-1865 but the term has been more generalized to include pieces up to the 1930-40s, and for some it is used to describe jewelry even later than that. But bewar. aste has been reproduced for many years and it can be extremely difficult to distinguish old from new.

In September 2003, Barnes & Noble Books of New York began to publish The Collector's Library series of some of the world's most notable literary works. By October 2005, fully fifty-nine volumes had been printed. In 2015, The Collector's Library was acquired by Pan Macmillan. Great Expectations, (09/21/2003), by Charles Dickens.

The information in this book is very helpful but one begs for more. The explanatory photos are all black and white which is fine but close-ups would have been more helpful because without them the details discussed cannot be seen. I realize a good deal of this problem is the time when the book was written (1970) and perhaps the technology was not available then. I wish Mr. Lewis or someone else would write an updated version. Well, what we non-jeweler collectors need is a book with detailed information about period pieces, the details that need to be viewed and what those details actually look like.
Having said that, this is the first book I've read that gives at least a bit of the hard information we need. Would recommend it to all collectors.

Very overpriced for a discarded library book but I guess it's the going rate...

There are a lot of books on paste jewellery now, but most of them cover the jewels of the 20th century. Very few venture in any detail into the lands of the 18th and 19th century, which are the areas that this book covers in depth.

The author details the technical aspects of how these early paste jewels were made, which enables you to seperate true Georgian jewels from the later Victorian and Edwardian ones. (and fully covered backs to the jewels are only a starting point - the Edwardians did the same thing to some of their jewels)

Although there is only a small selection of colour images the second half of the book is devoted to images of the type of jewels discussed in the technical portion of the book.

When you have read this book you will come away with a real appreciation for 18th century paste jewellery - the sheer craftsmanhip involved is astonishing and leaves modern paste for dead. If you are seriously thinking of purchasing any Georgian paste this is a book you should read before-hand as much "Georgian" paste as desribed by antique dealers the world over is simply wrong and usually of a later date than claimed.
