Eluned Phillips was the only woman to win the bardic crown at the National Eisteddfod of Wales twice, a feat she accomplished in 1967 at Bala and 1983 at Llangefni. Phillips was born in Cenarth, on the same day that Dylan Thomas was born in Swansea. She knew Thomas well, but did not number him among her close friends. She died of pneumonia aged 94 Eluned Phillips was the only woman to win the bardic crown at the National Eisteddfod of Wales twice, a feat she accomplished in 1967 at Bala and 1983 at Llangefni.

Eluned Phillips (27 October 1914 – 10 January 2009) was the only woman to win the bardic crown at the National Eisteddfod of Wales twice, a feat she accomplished in 1967 at Bala and 1983 at Llangefni.

He was born at Majorca House in New Quay, Cardiganshire. His father, Thomas Emrys James, was a minister of the Congregational denomination at Llandudno, and Dewi's mother Mary Ellen (née Jones), was the daughter of a sea captain. The family moved to Fishguard, where the Reverend James took on another church, and Dewi Emrys went to the local county school.

Eluned Phillips will celebrate her 93rd birthday later this month. Born on the same day in 1914 just 50 miles apart, writers Eluned Phillips and Dylan Thomas had much in common. She said she never really got on with Thomas. Either he was too drunk to talk or in a world of his ow.

Catrin Dafydd is a Welsh author, scriptwriter, poet and was awarded the Crown at the 2018 National Eisteddfod of Wales. Eluned Phillips was unusual among Welsh writers of her generation in that she embraced a bohemian lifestyle .

Her introduction to the raffish milieu of London's Fitzrovia wasmade possible in the late 1930s by Dewi Emrys, the dissolute ex-preacher and talented poet whose lifeshe treated in a biography publishedin 1971.
