The ""future"" theme doesn't really unify this slightly ragged collection, but there are some fine individual contributions. Particularly good: R. A. Lafferty (computer and its minions encounter the aboriginal substratum of the colonized universe); Felix C. Gotschalk (a very funny es-of-babes intellectual meritocracy); George Alee Effinger (dictator-computer partnership crosses a final Rubicon). Other notable names: Ursula K. Le Guin, Vonda N. McIntyre, Gene Wolfe.

Of all the science fiction I devoured as a child, these are the stories that still come to mind, all on their own. If you haven't read them piece-mail by now, in "Year's Best"s or Asimov's or what have you, then this collection is definitely worth your time.

Turns out, Dozois can write, too! Introduced by different authors, including James Patrick Kelly, Connie Willis and Paul McAuley, the stories will delight SF biz devotees.

The anthology also includes an invaluable summation about the stat. The Year's Best Science Fiction: Fourteenth Annual Collection. The story titles and authors are noted in other reviews. I bought it mostly for the Lafferty story, which I hadn't seen published elsewhere. All the stories are dystopian, except for Lafferty's, which simply exists in Lafferty's own universe. Don't let the country-simple, down-home talk of his native Oklahoma fool you. While talking about buffalo chips and clay, he'll stretch your mind until it breaks. And you'll say, "Thanks, Laff, " and come back for more.

Gene Wolfe seldom disappoints, and his story, the longest in the book, is up there with his best. James Tiptree Jr. (who we now know was a woman) comes in third with a slick, sad and scary tale. Ursula K. Le Guin's is fourth, a distant fourth. Stories about future psychology and psychiatry rarely ring true, and why do so many great sf writers have such a dismal view of the future? Was it the zeitgeist of the '70's? Or are we really on a hell-bound train? The others don't even get honorable mention.
