ArchivesBridge: Luck as Well as Skill Needed For Appreciating a Double. This is the second of an important pair of books published last week by PrenticeHall. Ewen deals effectively with twostage planning for the player who has heard an opening to his right: when to double and then bid; when to bid and then double; when to pass and then double; and so on.

In the card game contract bridge, a takeout double is a low-level conventional call of "Double" over an opponent's bid as a request for partner to bid his best of the unbid suits. The most common takeout double is after an opponent's opening bid of one of a suit where the double shows a hand with opening values, support for all three unbid suits (at least three cards in each) and shortness in the suit doubled (preferably, no more than two).

This the 10th printing of the 1973 paperback version.

Old book but still pretty informative. Would really recommend a newer book to this one. Some of the information in this book is outdated but most of it was right on.

I have read and am reading many bridge books. I have learned SO MUCH from this book. I learned more on overcalls here than in my overcalls book. I recommend this to any experienced player who wants to hone their game. Might not be good for beginners.
