Ralph Wright Ketner (September 20, 1920 – May 29, 2016) was an American businessman and philanthropist. He was known for being the founder of Food Lion (which was founded as Food Town) in 1957. Ketner was born in Rimertown, North Carolina on September 20, 1920 to parents George Robert Ketner and Effie Yost Ketner. Ketner grew up selling newspapers and almanacs, all while learning what he called "street smarts"

Let me start by saying that I had known Ralph Ketner most of my life and was a bagboy when the first Food Town opened. in 1957. Ralph was assistant store manager. As I was reading this book, it was as if he was telling me the story. (On the Friday nights after the store closed, he would tell us some of his stories.) The book went into great detail about what went into the founding of this company, especially as it related to Mr. Ketner's personal dealings with suppliers, distributors, store owners, etc. His mathematical brilliance was a central theme for the book.

This book tells the story of how the South Eastern grocery store chain Food Lion was built on having the lowest food prices in North Carolina, and how the company increased sales by 50% that first year to survive. Food Lion went public in 1970, the same year as Wal*Mart with the same low price philosophy. Food Lion made its original investors millionaires, but its growth was stopped in 1992 in Texas with the ABC Prime Time Live show that attacked it unfairly with help from the labor union (UFCW). Even though Food Lion did not carry many of the items in the show and later sued ABC and won millions the company never recovered. In recent years the company (which is now owned by Delhaize Group)trades under the ticker symbol DEG and has increased from $28 a share in 2003 to over $98 a share in 2007. Its new Bloom and Bottom Dollar stores are being received successfully in the market place. I believe this book is a must read for all long term Food Lion employees to understand how the company started.
