Dorothy Gilman was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to minister James Bruce and Essa (Starkweather) Gilman. She started writing when she was 9. At 11, she competed against 10- to 16-year-olds in a story contest and won first place. This period was the focus of her memoir, A New Kind of Country. Her knowledge of medicinal herbs informed several of her stories, including A Nun in the Closet and Thale's Folly. Thale's Folly is one of her few books featuring a male protagonist; most of her books feature strong women having adventures around the world

I have to admit to being surprised that I am having to review this again, since I reviewed it a few weeks ago, but oh well. I love rereading this book that talks about Dorothy Gilman's real life, especially the time spent in Nova Scotia. Her faith in working through her sadness with meditation particularly caught my attention, so I am glad I now have my own book I can make marks in and underline...

My neighbor first lent me this book, then I came to Amazon to find a copy for myself. It's definitely something to be read again. The book is about the life Dorothy Gilman prepares for herself in this remote part of the country, after her children are grown and she divorces. She revels in being alone and figuring out how to navigate what sounds like fairly tough country and her life. She is the heroine of her own story, but I was surprised how I feltl there were some parallels to the strong female characters she writes in her fiction.

The Apotheoses of Lacspor
I first read this book when I was going through a divorce and found in it so much emotional support that I have purchased and given away at least 20 copies of it, despite its being out of print. Ms. Gilman is an excellent writer and her account of her move from New York to a small fishing village in Nova Scotia after her divorce is fraught with determination as well as trepidation and it underscores the need in all of us to explore where our potential might lie, no matter that the path is not always clearly defined or easily traversed.

A whole new view of a wonderful author's life. Very thought provoking.

Love Dorothy Gilman's "Mrs. Pollifax" series and so was interested in this book. It was a thoughtful book, but I wish she had included more of herself into the narrative. If you like this you might also enjoy: The Feast Nearby, Still Life with Chickens, One Man's Meat and A Naturalist Buys an Old Farm.

I have read all of Dorothy Gilmans mysteries in paperback. I enjoyed her characters and stories and always wondered how much of her was written into the books like an alter ego. I related well to her Mrs. Pollifax books because so many older women are in need of re-invention and rediscovery. I often wondered what else she had written and am pleased to have found A New Kind of Country. Her vivid details about life in Nova Scotia living alone and happy are wonderful.

I have been reading Dorothy Gilman mysteries over and over for many years. I have never known much about her. This book was in interesting portrait of the lady.
