Greenwood Tulsa, also known as "Black Wall Street", was one of the most commercially successful and affluent majority African-American communities in the United States. When evaluating the prosperity of "Black Wall Street", one angle to take into consideration is this perceived threat to the status quo and how this perceived threat may have eventually led "Black Wall Street" to its ultimate demise. In the specific example of Greenwood, Oklahoma, this perceived economic threat led to the eventual downfall of "Black Wall Street". For instance, many white residents felt intimidated by the growth and expansion of "Black Wall Street".

Tulsa, Oklahoma, was home to one of the wealthiest black communities in the nation. This neighborhood was so prosperous that it was known as the Black Wall Street, officially known as Greenwood. White supremacy simply couldn’t tolerate such an independent black community in their midst. To this end, they felt that something had to be done.

This book was not what I expected only because I thought it was going to show wear and tear. I have to say this is a very good copy and I thank you for getting it to me quickly.

There's perhaps no other printed resource available that gathers so much data about the Tulsa Massacre of 1921 and organizes it within one book. Gates has harvested, sliced, diced and served up a compendium of most anything you'd want to know about this historical event. She provides far-ranging context beyond what happened on those three days in the early summer of 1921. Kudos to her and her researchers for tackling such an immense project. Her tireless professionalism shines through. However, the book suffers several distractions, beginning with the cover art. Though well done, it gives the appearance of a young adult book and belies the serious scholarship within its covers. More important, the booked needed the services of a strong professional editor with experience in organizing historical texts. The content tends to sprawl at times and would have benefitted from the elimination of some prose passages, reduction of others, and an overall improvement in the book's organization for more helpful accessibility. None of these critiques outweigh the book's importance, however. Thank God we have this work. Let's hope Gates will prepare a second edition of this book that will improve on the delivery of what may very well become the seminal text on the subject.
