To have gone out to the other side of the world with an army of invasion, and had a part, however small, in the subjugation of a strange people, and then to see a new government set up, and, as an official of that government, watch it work out through a number of years, is an unusual and interesting experience, especially to a. lawyer.

This book is an attempt, by one whose intimate acquaintance with two remotely separated peoples will be denied in no quarter, to interpret each to the other. How intelligent that acquaintance is, is of course altogether another matter, which the reader will determine for himself. Books related to The American Occupation of the Philippines 1898-1912.

You don't have to buy this from Amazon as the entire book is free to view electronically from various sources on the internet; simply do a google search. I did read the book as part of my thesis on the Philippines and I will say this book very much reads like college history text but the chronological organization leaves plenty to be desired. Blount often narrates a storyline and several chapters later will return to a past time period, oftentimes requiring the reader to reference three or four chapters to get a “complete” description of an event. He also leaves out dates on when events happened, leaving it up to the reader to guess or do independent research on when those events actually happened. Blount does provide plenty of detail along with supporting evidence (many from congressional hearings) to enforce his point that colonizing the Philippines was a contradiction to US values.

This is a print-on-demand by "First Rate Publishers" (a stretch of the imagination). There are no page numbers, no index, no table of contents and no title on the spine. It is worthless for any kind of research paper or as a reference. Find a different edition.

Fills a gap in Philippine history not found in school texts.

I missed the logic that the book was actually the chest thumping accounts of Spain's total conquest of the people of the Philippines. If you need to find out how many Filippino slaves it took to empty their homes for a new Spanish military compound, then you'll probably find it here.

It's a little dry.....much like a school history book. It's factual and detailed but not really all that interesting.

My wife is a student at De La Salle University, Manila taking her Master's Degree in Philippine History. I purchased this book at her recommendation. I began reading the book but found it to be very crudely put together. There is no preface, introduction, table of contents or index. Often sentences would begin and then end with *****. Dates are often incomplete, just the month and no day or year. I told my wife that it was an unpleasant read. Subsequently she advised that her book is not anything like this, having preface, introduction table of contents and index. Also, the text of the book is complete. If I could give zero stars I would, especially for the deplorable job that has been done in reproducing it. My wife thinks that the USA is trying to hide some of their history. I don't know about that but can't think of any other plausible explanation for such a pathetic offering. Too too bad!

I was lookiing for a description of politico-military operations in the Philippines proper. Instead the content is heavy on the political linterfaces of the operators with Washington. Of interest, but not what I was looking for.

This is probably the closest you will ever get to an official US Army history of the occupation of the Philippines. It is well written and quite descriptive.
