This was required reading for my core humanities class but it has a lot of interesting primary sources inside of it that are fascinating to read and give you a real insight into the past. It is one of the few books I didn't sell immediately after the class was over. I lent it out to a friend who wanted to read it.

I used this for my core humanity class as a required text. It serve its purpose and you actually learn something from this.

It was used but great prices & really decent condition !

The book was in horrible shape when I received it. The front cover is ripped off. And way too many highlighted pages. Was not satisfied at all.

This was delivered perfect timing for my short winter class. This book was used most and was a good read.

Hi, there! I, too, like you, had my arm twisted by the wondrous college-textbook industry into buying many books I did not need nor ever use again. Ever.

In light of this, I find it prudent to suggest to students needing FIVE HUNDRED YEARS: AMERICAN IN THE WORLD that instead of getting that super-expensive 5th Edition, they instead buy the super-cheap, don't-have-to-eat-ramen-budget 4th edition. It is -- to a T -- the SAME EXACT BOOK. The only (and I mean only) difference between the two editions is that a few of the works have been switched around. That's it. Literally.

So, do yourselves a favor and screw over the college text book industry by buying yourself the exact same and much cheaper 4th Edition.

I think your wallet and your stomach will thank you.

(They thanked me, anyway, when I bought the 4th instead of the 5th edition.)

It is interesting that the previous reviewer would claim this book as biased. All the readings from this book come from writings of those in American History; from Christopher Columbus, John Withrop, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine, to Sojourner Truth, Abraham Lincoln, Jacob Riis, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Interpretation of failure and succes is left to the reader. There is no bias in that. This is a book of writings from the far past in American and United States history to the near present. A collection of a great many view points, ideas, and expressions that can help us understand the bad and good in our history, and help us to understand what shapes the country as it stands today. If you seek to understand the United States today, you must seek to understand that which has shaped it, it's history. In this book that history is not always pleasant, but not always bad. In short, if you seek the viewpoints of historical figures in this nations past; be they pleasent or otherwise, read this book. If you seek only a biased history that does not reflect on our shortcomings as well as our triumphs and does not truly educate, look elsewhere.

Pretty good. For getting the book used it was in great condition. It has been very useful. Also, it got to my destination as planned, probably a day in advanced with no problems.
