An engrossing, unadulterated biography of Bloody Mary -elder daughter of Henry VIII, Catholic zealot, and England’s first reigning Queen Mary Tudor was the first woman to inherit the throne of England. Reigning through one of Britain’s stormiest eras, she earned the nickname Bloody Mary for her violent religious persecutions. She was born a princess, the daughter of Henry VIII and the Spanish Katherine of Aragon. Yet in the wake of Henry’s break with Rome, Mary, a devout Catholic, was declared illegitimate and was disinherited

Chapter Eight - Mary’s England. Mary’s motto as queen. When I first told friends and acquaintances that I was writing a new life of Mary I there was a mixed reaction. Chapter Nine - Wyatt’s Rebellion. Chapter Ten - King Philip. Some agreed it was high time that England’s first queen regnant was portrayed in a more positive light.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It helped me gain a new appreciation for what Mary accomplished. Well-written and well-researched, it is a valuable addition to a study of Tudor queens.

Beautifully written biography about a much maligned English queen who lived through a painful, dangerous childhood, but somehow survived, and was able to govern wisely, represent England faithfully, and remain faithful to her religious faith and ideals. This book unveiled a strong, moral woman who overcame many odds just to stay live, and then to govern England and remain faithful to the Catholic Church.

After reading Philippa Gregory on the Tudors, including her portrayal of the young Mary Tudor, I wished to learn more about England's first Queen.
The book was very readable but, though written as historical biography, I have to conclude that it errs more to hagiography in its effort to highlight the positive aspects of Mary's character and her reign. It was interesting to see that the first three years of Mary's reign (her more pleasant years) are afforded 100 pages of script while the last three years ( her least pleasant years) produce less than 50 pages. In depth historical examination is lacking, such as any analysis of the many persecutions of Protestants during her years. One has to turn to classic histories like Bindoff's Pelican History of Tudor England for a more balanced assessment of Mary's years.
