This book is a 1968 rendering on the medieval history of the Principality of Moscow during the 14th century written by the late British historian, Professor John Lister Illingworth Fennell. Actually, this book is the second book in a trilogy of books on medieval Russian History--specifically the history of the Principality of Moscow.

The first book in the trilogy is Professor Fennel's 1983 book called "The Crisis of Medieval Russia (1200-1304)." This book, called "The Emergence of Moscow (1304-1359)" and as the title itself reveals, the book covers the period of time from 1304 until 1359. This is the time from the reign of Yuri Danilovich, the second Prince of Moscow from 1304 when his father Daniel, the first Prince of Moscow died, through 1325 when Yuri died and was succeeded by his younger brother who became Ivan I. Ivan I died in 1340 and was succeeded by his son Simeon (The Proud) of Moscow who reigned as Prince of Moscow until his death in 1353 when he was succeeded by his younger brother who became Ivan II and reigned as Grand Prince of Moscow until 1359. This reign represents the end of the second volume in the Fennell trilogy.

The third book in Fennell's trilogy is his 1961 biography of Ivan III, who reigned as Grand Prince of Moscow from 1462 until 1505. It is the subject of Ivan III (called "The Great) that truly captured the heart of John Fennell for all his life. Indeed, his later books including the present book were written about periods of time prior to the reign of Ivan the Great still seem to written in a style that suggests that the history of Moscow was largely a build up to the reign of Ivan III.
