History in their blood. by Hugh Aylmer Dempsey. Published 1982 by Hudson Hills Press, Distributed by Viking Penguin in New York.

By book lover Nicholas de Grandmaison was an interesting character. This book is in two parts. Born in France but raised in Russia, he eventually made his way to Canada where his life's purpose was to draw the most authentic-looking Indians (based on his own romantic notions) he could find, including individuals from the Blackfeet, Cree and Sarcee. The first part is a pretty good biography of de Grandmaison (if not a little uneven here and there) and the second part showcases sixty-four of his pastel portraits. My copy is from 1982 (not 1984) and does not include anything by Frederick . .

Flag as Inappropriate. History in their Blood : The Indian Portraits of Nicholas de Grandmaison, Vancouver : Douglas & McIntyre, 1982. Dempsey authored numerous articles and books, such as Crowfoot, Chief of the Blackfeet (1973), The Gentle Persuader: A Biography of James Gladstone, Indian Senator (1986), and Red Crow: Warrior Chief (1978), which focus on the culture and history of the First Nation peoples of Alberta.

Dempsey has authored more than 20 books, focusing primarily on the history of people of the Blackfoot Confederacy. He received an honorary doct.

WONDERFUL art book! The many color plates are absolutely STUNNING! I was truly AMAZED to see how much detail & expression were achieved by the artist in a "pastel on paper" medium! The faces are so soulful...so realistic...with so much "personality". I'm very pleased with this purchase & I'm sure I'll enjoy it for years to come!

Goodness Gracious! What an exceptional talent this artist had! Makes me want to see the actual portraits close up at the museum in Canada. Those faces evoke the time of the extraordinary people and cultures of the first nations.I find them haunting especially knowing their fate of the reserves, forced relocations and those monstrous residential schools both in the US and Canada.Long live all first peoples!

My copy is from 1982 (not 1984) and does not include anything by Frederick J. Dockstader, as listed in the description here. Oddly, both books are listed at 124 pages. The paper quality in my copy is very good; perhaps it was reprinted on a lesser quality paper (just a guess). Anyhow, if you love looking at Native American faces (as I do), appreciate good art, and can get yourself a nice and affordable copy of this book, it certainly comes recommended. Like I said above, a wonderful little known treasure.
