So Cold the River Электронная библиотека e-libra. ru Читать онлайн So Cold the River. That was what a sociology professor had said one day in a freshman seminar, and Eric Shaw had liked something about the phrase, wrote it and only it in a notebook that would soon be forgotten and then discarded. Artifacts of their ambition.

And Alyssa Bradford had used the correct word in describing it, because only one word came close-surreal. The place was that, and then some. Pale yellow towers flanked a mammoth crimson dome, and the rest of the structure fell away beneath, hundreds of windows visible in the stone. It looked more like a castle than a hotel, something that belonged in Europe, not on this stretch of farmland. A horn blew behind him, and Eric realized he’d coasted almost to a stop in the middle of the road.

So Cold the River puts an October chill in your blood by the end of the first chapter. I read "So Cold the River" for an upcoming book club. I thought the book was OK - not great, but also not a waste of time. It's not much longer before you've turned on all the lights and rechecked all the window locks. Few novelists warrant mention alongside Stephen King or Peter Straub. It was an entertaining read, and you even learn some things about thunderstorms. The book has two timeframes - 1) modern times and 2) the 1920's.

A horn blew behind him, and Eric realized he’d coasted almost to a stop in the middle of the road. He pushed on the gas again, found a set of twin stone arches that guarded a long, winding brick drive that led up to the hotel. West Baden Springs-Carlsbad of America, the arches said.

Josiah Bradford, the only direct descendant of the Campbell Bradford who had drowned in the Lost River, had been dead for fifteen hours before this was revealed. The letter made no mention of an odd green glass bottle, or of the reason the old man had for taking Campbell’s name as his own. Eric lets everyone wonder about this.

So cold the river : that’s the strange phrase uttered by a dying man in Michael Koryta’s calculatingly spooky . The book’s meteorological events are tracked by Anne McKenny, a kindly octogenarian who serves as the book’s cloud expert and spiritual barometer.

So cold the river : that’s the strange phrase uttered by a dying man in Michael Koryta’s calculatingly spooky new novel. The man is a 95-year-old Chicago millionaire called Campbell Bradford. And he is hardly the only person in this book to be rattled by unnaturally chilly fluids. Thanks to her very long memory she becomes increasingly valuable to Eric as he begins to realize that what he knows about Campbell Bradford makes no sense at all.

I really enjoyed this book and have purchased several copies to give as gifts for others. Koryta's characters are well-developed, interesting and relatable and his writing is elegant and descriptive. He so beautifully describes the hotels in West Baden and French Lick (yes, they are real) that I felt compelled to go there myself. The story is part suspense, part supernatural horror but in the best possible sense of both. I would recommend this book to both readers of Alice Hoffman and Stephen King and to those who enjoy literary suspense. I very rarely re-read books, but I have read this one twice!

I read "So Cold the River" for an upcoming book club. I thought the book was OK -- not great, but also not a waste of time. It was an entertaining read, and you even learn some things about thunderstorms.

The book has two timeframes -- 1) modern times and 2) the 1920's. The modern story revolves around Eric Shaw who is on a project to create a film about the area and a mysterious person named Campbell Bradshaw. The 1920's story revolves around Campbell. There is a "Lost River" that flows through two cities and a valley in Indiana, and it is the source for intrigue, mineral water, mystery, and mayhem as Eric soon finds out.

I felt a little short-changed as we learned a lot about the 1920's Campbell, but we learned very little of the modern Campbell. Without spoiling the story, I'll just say a more complete understanding of the modern Campbell would have been nice to include in the main story or at least the Prologue.

!! Warning !! There is some profanity in the book, but it isn't overdone. It seems inline with the characters, and it wasn't overly used. There is also some physical violence, but I didn't feel like it was too graphic or frequent.

Having stayed at the hotel this book is about many times, I was riveted to read the story about it. At first, it was really interesting but it began to get a little bizarre and redundant, about a fourth of the book could have been committed, seems the author was trying to fill pages. I did not truly understand the whole meaning of the book but it was worth reading.

Not the typical story by Michael Koryta. I started reading his novesl due to the fact that he is a local author from Bloomington, Indiana and now I am hooked. The wife and have been to the locations described in the book and he is spot on in his descriptions.

Another incredible story from one of the best writers of our time. So Cold the River is a unique story and a master work of mystery and suspense. Loved it, and highly recommended.

Wonderful book! Bought a copy for each of my daughters in law after our visit to the area a few weeks ago. If you like a thriller, you will love this one.

Depth of characterization, vivid descriptions of scenery and architecture, rich Indiana history and meteorology. This is not a blood-and-guts, leave on the lights terror story. It is a tale of a man thrown into unforeseen and unusual circumstances requiring the reader to suspend his/her disbelief and allow the beautifully woven tale to unfold. Many of the historical facts can be readily verified, and are quite intriguing. One reviewer remarked that the water was haunted, or it was ghost water or something to that effect. I did not find this to be the case. There is indeed something about the water, but haunted it is not. The ultimate explanation of the water's characteristics only requires a willingness to entertain belief in an afterlife, or at least a young boy's belief in it.

Mediocre in both plot and character development. I was actually rooting against the protaganist at times. Hmm. Would probably make an excellent movie, though.

The various characters' opinions and actions weren't explored in enough detail to be believable. For instance, we could have used a more in-depth self-analysis on why he single-handedly self-destructed his marriage. And why on earth does he hold such a grudge against his father-in-law, apparently simply due to jealousy over success? Who really cares about a main character that petty?

Best character was Ann; best parts of the plot were focused on the the bottle itself.
