Stroheim's masterpiece about human degradation, 'Greed' (1924), was also made at considerable expense. The amazing histories are worth the price of the book. The screenplay reveals Stroheim's genius constrained by black and white, silent film.

I was intrigued by Erich von Stroheim's 1924 silent classic Greed. Stroheim's script had more references to color than I would expect for a black-and-white movie. Only this "mutilated" version survives. Finding an intact copy of the original version is considered one of the holy grails of silent film historians. It appears that some scenes were intended to be filmed in full color.

Erich von Stroheim was an Austrian-American director, actor and producer, most notable as being a film star of the silent era, subsequently noted as an auteur for his directorial work. In the triple capacity of actor, military adviser, and assistant to the director, he was on hand during the filming of D. W. Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance. His Prussian looks were much in demand in villainous roles after America’s entry into World War I and it was then that he became known as the man you love to hate. Blind Husbands (1918) marked his debut as a director and it is the only one of his films to survive in the form Stroheim intended.
A Year of Film History Challenge (watching a little bit of film history month by month, decade by decade). and also my second attempt at watching this). What was once a seven-and-a-half hour epic of a film by Erich von Stroheim was chopped down by the studio to just over two hours and twenty minutes in length
