Erich Oswald Hans Carl Maria von Stroheim (born Erich Oswald Stroheim; September 22, 1885 – May 12, 1957) was an Austrian-American director, actor and producer, most noted as a film star and avant garde, visionary director of the silent era. Greed is a 1924 American silent film, written and directed by Erich von Stroheim and based on the 1899 Frank Norris novel McTeague. The film tells the story of McTeague, a San Francisco dentist, who marries his best friend Schouler's girlfriend Trina.

I was intrigued by Erich von Stroheim's 1924 silent classic Greed. Stroheim's script had more references to color than I would expect for a black-and-white movie. Only this "mutilated" version survives. Finding an intact copy of the original version is considered one of the holy grails of silent film historians. It appears that some scenes were intended to be filmed in full color.

Erich von Stroheim was an Austrian-American director, actor and producer, most notable as being a film star of the silent era, subsequently noted as an auteur for his directorial work. In the triple capacity of actor, military adviser, and assistant to the director, he was on hand during the filming of D. W. Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance. His Prussian looks were much in demand in villainous roles after America’s entry into World War I and it was then that he became known as the man you love to hate. Blind Husbands (1918) marked his debut as a director and it is the only one of his films to survive in the form Stroheim intended.

A Year of Film History Challenge (watching a little bit of film history month by month, decade by decade). and also my second attempt at watching this). What was once a seven-and-a-half hour epic of a film by Erich von Stroheim was chopped down by the studio to just over two hours and twenty minutes in length

Erich von Stroheim was born Erich Oswald Stroheim in 1885, in Vienna, Austria, to Johanna (Bondy), from Prague, and Benno Stroheim, a hatter from Gleiwitz, Germany (now Gliwice, Poland). His family was Jewish

Erich von Stroheim was born Erich Oswald Stroheim in 1885, in Vienna, Austria, to Johanna (Bondy), from Prague, and Benno Stroheim, a hatter from Gleiwitz, Germany (now Gliwice, Poland). His family was Jewish. After spending some time working in his father's hat factory, he emigrated to America around 1909.

. . .Stroheim's masterpiece about human degradation, 'Greed' (1924), was also made at considerable expense, in large part because of location shooting, including scenes in Death Valley. The original ran 10 hours, much too long for commercial release; an inexperienced studio cutter reduced it to an hour and a half, and the work print was destroyed, as were Stroheim's versions of almost all of his films. Stroheim's extravagance ensured the demise of his directing career, although his acting career as a monocled seducer continued to flourish long after he had ceased to direct.

Frank Norris wrote "McTeague", a best-selling book. Eric Stroheim read "McTeague" and vowed to make it into a movie titled "Greed." This book contains some amazing short histories of Stroheim and his silent movie — studio politics, egos, travesties, and tragedies — and as much of the original screenplay as could be found. The amazing histories are worth the price of the book. The screenplay reveals Stroheim's genius constrained by black and white, silent film.
