The prolific author Percy M Young, who has died aged 91, was best known to many for his books about the life and music of Edward Elgar. But while most of Young's more than 60 published works were on music, a number were on football, his other great enthusiasm. One of Young's most substantial achievements was The Bachs, 1500-1850 (1970), while to accompany the launch of the New Grove Dictionary Of Music And Musicians, to which he contributed, he was commissioned to write what proved to be a highly readable biography (1980) of George Grove, the Victorian founder of the dictionary.
