Kornitzer 1952, a book on adoption practice, includes a chapter on the history of adoption, as did McWhinnie 1967 in a study of the outcomes of people adopted as children in Scotland. More recently, Montgomery 2010 is an overview of adoption in the United Kingdom. O’Halloran 2009 is a useful introduction to the whole issue of adoption, as it looks at it in an international context but has considerable material on the United Kingdom.

Overall the adoption system - including the courts - is too slow and bureaucratic, too opaque and too unfair. Children should not be left waiting indefinitely for the perfect family on spurious grounds or a perverse sense of what is and what is not politically correct

Overall the adoption system - including the courts - is too slow and bureaucratic, too opaque and too unfair. Children should not be left waiting indefinitely for the perfect family on spurious grounds or a perverse sense of what is and what is not politically correct. Alan Milburn, the then Secretary of State for Health, quoted in the Guardian, 30 October 2001).

Margaret D. Jacobs, Chancellor’s Professor of History at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, is the author of the Bancroft Prize–winning White Mother to a Dark Race: Settler Colonialism, Maternalism, and the Removal of Indigenous Children in the American West and Australia, 1880–1940 (Nebraska, 2009) and Engendered Encounters: Feminism and Pueblo Cultures, 1879–1934 (Nebraska, 1999).

In adoption by unrelated adults, the courts have traditionally attempted to ease adjustment to the adoptive family and protect the privacy of the (often unwed) mother by maintaining secrecy regarding the child's birth parents. Since the 1970s, however, a growing number of adopted children have attempted to identify their birth parents, and "open adoption," in which adoptive and birth parents maintain a relationship, has become more accepted.
