These poems have more of the feudal (and older) sense of belonging to the land than any I know since Wordsworth’s. Though Read concentrated mainly on poetry and criticism, one of his most widely read books is a novel. Read’s development as a poet, critic, and thinker owed itself to the influence of several important mentors. Worth T. Harder considered The Green Child a masterpiece, a work as extraordinary now as it was when first published in 1935. Dreams of paradise and love. A great poem penned by an equally great poet. sharon (3/1/2018 10:15:00 PM).
Yes! tho' that long dream were of hopeless sorrow, 'Twere better than the cold reality Of waking life, to him whose heart must be, And hath been still, upon the lovely earth, A chaos of deep passion, from his birth. But should it be- that dream eternally Continuing- as dreams have been to me In my young boyhood- should it thus be given, 'Twere folly still to hope for higher Heaven. Dreams of paradise and love.
