While sustainability indicators, indices and reporting systems gained growing popularity in both the public and private sectors, their effectiveness in influencing actual policy and practices often remains limited. 1 Metrics and indices. Accompanying this need is the requirement, brought in part by the information revolution, to better differentiate between information that matters in any given policy context versus information that is of secondary importance or irrelevant.

The new UK Quality Code effective from 2012-13, also emphasises a move away from the traditional ‘representational’ model of student engagement towards a more participatory approach. There is a greater focus on students being increasingly active participants in their own education and they therefore can and should be directly involved in their own institution’s approaches to QME. The second sub-question is Quality (enhancement) cultures: what are the experiences and perceptions?

Quality: When someone actually does come across your work, they will be more likely to be impressed. Your work might not reach as far, but it converts better. While you don’t have as many chances to go viral, you each attempt has better odds. Every time I would be slow to make progress on my project, not wanting to endure the shame of making a wrong move. On the other hand there were students who would jump right in, and usually fail spectacularly - at least initially. I would foolishly laugh to myself about their failures and think to myself that I’m so glad that I didn’t just jump in headfirst like they did.
