Most scriptures don't interest me. This scripture is my favorite. Other Mandukya translations I saw lacked the touch of a Master and were consequently hardly worth the read, even though;for example, I like the Ramamkrishna monk, his translation couldn't deliver the sense of divine depth that Swami Krishnananda did so it was a waste of time. Swami Krishnananda, while not my guru, was someone I'll never forget, this version is a book that is a must for those who are serious about an Indian view of scriptures that can be helpful to an aspirant.

The Mandukya Upanisad is the shortest amongst the principal Upanisads having just twelve 12 mantras. It analyses the entire range of human consciousness in the three states of waking (jagrat), dream (swapna), and dreamless sleep (susupti). It asserts unequivocally that the Absolute Reality is non-dual (advaita) and without attributes (nirguna). It also has a unique method of approach to Truth in providing as a symbol for meditation the mono-syllable AUM - which is made up of three sounds A ,U, M - and describing its philosophical implications.

V. Subrahmanya Iyer, in his Foreword to Swami Nikhilananda's edition, Mandukya Upanishad With Gaudapada's Karika and Shankara's Commentary, stresses its importance by declaring: "If a man cannot afford to study all the hundred and more Upanishads, it will be enough, it is declared in the Muktikopanishad, if he reads the one Upanishad of Mandukya, since, as Shankara also says, it contains the quintessence of all of them."

The present edition gives the text of the Mandukya Upanishad in Devanagari script, transliteration, and translation, followed by an extremely interesting and useful 80-page analysis of the major themes.

In short, the purpose of this book is basically to elevate a man from the gross and material world to the world of Brahman. The Upanishad first explains of those truths which we experience in our day to day life. It describes the three states of consciousness (waking, dreaming, and deep sleep) experienced by all of us. Afterwards, it discourses the supreme truth to which we are inclined to know. Thus, it begins with the description of truths and takes us to the realization of supreme truth. It follows the paradigm from simplicity to complexity, so it becomes easier for readers to trace the links.

It describes the Atma in the fragments of quarters, which is a tedious and detailed description of the three states of consciousness. It focuses on the different stages of the mediation process, and explains in detail that the moment you separate yourself from your identification with body, mind, and thoughts; you will find in possession of yourself. The description of this book offers an absolute opportunity to understand the Eternal truth.

This book precisely addresses the spiritual aspirants who are more inclined towards the knowledge of the supreme truth, the ultimate reality of life.
