This book represents the encyclopedic knowledge of the author and is indispensable for natural historians who plan travel by what mammals they can see along the way. Destined to become a classic. It's so amazing that for the first book of its kind to tackle this subject, this book does such a fantastic job. The species covered include every one that one can see in North America. And the places & specifics about how to find them aren't just some generalizations, but based on personal experience, usually the author's.

From the book jacket: "Here is the long-awaited guide to the Blancan and Pleistocene mammal species of North America. Illustrated with maps and tables, faunal restorations, and line drawings of teeth, skulls, and limb bones, "Pleistocene Mammals of North America" provides a coherent picture of the origin, evolution, and distribution of North American mammals in the period from 3,000,000 to 8,000 years before the present. This book has the most information that a paleontologist can find about North American mammals in one place. It is an exhaustive text book chock full of facts about all the mammals from that continent that have lived in the last 3 million years.

His books include The Smithsonian Book of North American Mammals and Mammal Species of the World. This book does a fantastic job identifying all 442 mammal species of North America. Some of the more helpful features: a quick guide to point you to the right section of the book, fantastic artwork (not distracting photos) to reference, information on identifying the tracks of some of the larger species, and of course, most helpful to an amateur like me, there are plenty of pictures of scat!!
