The author presents evidence that the origins of modern cartography is traceable to pre-Classical times, and demonstrates that most current ideas of ancient mapping are based on familiarity with atypical examples. To defend this thesis, he provides examples of the full range of Greek and Roman maps, including town and building plans, itineraries and road maps, sea itineraries and maps in art form. This work is a major contribution to the study of cartography, and also of interest to anyone interested in the study of Greco-Roman culture. Dilke is the best English writer on Roman surveying. He earlier wrote a book about Roman land surveying, The Roman Land Surveyors: An Introduction to the Agrimensores, and later contributed chapters to volume 1 of the University of Chicago Press "History of Cartography", now freely available online.

Aside from well known writers like Strabo, Pliny, and Ptolemy, there are less known writers whose works survive in whole or in fragments: Pomponius Mela, translated by Romer, Pomponius Mela's Description of the World; Graham Shipley's translation, "Pseudo-Skylax's Periplous: the Circumnavigation of the Inhabited World"; Avienus's "Ora Maritima". There are many more Greek and Roman geographers for which fragments exist, like Dicaearchus, Dicaearchus of Messana: Text, Translation, and Discussion (Rutgers University Studies in Classical Humanities), Eratosthenes, Hipparchus, Isidore of Charax, Marcian of Heraclea. The two big collections of fragments are "Geographi Graeci minores", edited by Müller, and "Geographi Latini minores", edited by Riese. Some of these fragments are translated in Warmington, "Greek Geography", but there is a large body of texts that still do not have English translations.
