O'Malley was born in Portland but moved to Butte when he was eight, working the mines then becoming a respected journalist. Recently Viewed and Featured.

Often referred to these days as Butte, America, this tough, proud, gritty town of some thirty-odd thousand souls today, was once home to nearly four times that number, making it the Wild West's only real city.

In this episode, Aaron Parrett and I discuss two books, David Abrams' Brave Deeds, and a Butte classic, Richard K. O'Malley's Mile High Mile Deep. With thanks to Brie Ripley for her production genius. And to Aaron for his musical contributions. Breakfast In Montana by Russell Rowland & Aaron Parrett on Apple Podcasts. Breakfast in Montana.

In this first episode, Russell and Aaron talk about two books from Butte, Mile High, Mile Deep by Richard K. O'Malley, and Brave Deeds, by David Abrams. These two books represent two of the interesting facets of Montana literature in that one of them, (Mile High) was written while O'Malley was the Associated Press Bureau Chief in Paris. But it's considered the quintessential Butte novel. The other, Brave Deeds, is about the war in Iraq, but it was written in Butte

Richard Kilroy O'Malley.

Mile High Mile Deep may be the richest, most vivid first hand account there is of life in Butte, Montana during the 1920's. Often referred to these days as Butte, America, this tough, proud, gritty town of some thirty-odd thousand souls today, was once home to nearly four times that number, making it the Wild West's only real city. It was made up of ethnic districts as diverse as New York or Chicago, so that early in this century the air was filled with a dozen tongues, as the Irish, Italians, Finns, Swedes, Norwegians, Cornishmen, Montenegrins, Yugoslavs, along with others, poured in to mine for copper.

My Dad lived in Butte during the time that Dick wrote about and I surely wish I had read it when he was still alive, he would have shared many things that Dick shared with the reader. The book was very well written and drew a picture of Butte that I know is true. It was (and still is) a rough and tumble town but with a heart of gold. The history of Butte is often sad but it is what made Montana what she is and the miners and their families gave so much to make it what it is today. I hope the folks who live there can save a bit of the history before "The Pit" swallows it up.

As a native of the Butte and Anaconda area, the book is an authentic portrait of the 20's in the area. My grandfather shared similar stories, he worked in the mines during this time. The book is telling of the culture of the area and early emigrant history. This book is entertaining and a easy read. I received the book in good shape and in a timely manner. I look forward to reading Hobo, another book by the same author.

Richard O'Malley was my dad's best friend as they were growing up in Butte, Montana during the '20s and '30s. They became separated and Richard left Butte. Not knowing the fate of my father, but still wanting to write about his experiences with his best friend, Richard O'Malley wrote about his friend Frank Lardner. My dad's name was Frank Gardner and he died in 1958 from lung cancer. Everything in the book is based on the truth, except the ending and death of Frank Lardner at the end of the story. Richard O'Malley didn't know the fate of my father until long after my dad's death and the publishing of the book, otherwise the ending may have been different as well as the last name. Thanks to Richard O'Malley for bringing my father back to life for me. You see, I was only 6 when he died. Now I know more about my father than I ever knew before.

I thought at first this was going to be a knockoff of Great Expectations, as one recognizes a brief cameo of that story's arc...but it's not. It is a diary of events written by the son of a newspaperman in 1920's Butte and as such it is an easy and very interesting read. While the book does a terrific job of evoking all of the stimuli of the senses--sights, sounds, tastes, smells and the behavior of the miners and their families, it should not be thought of as another muckraker effort. Rather it transports the reader to the times and concerns of Dick, the storyteller. Life was hard then and in that place, and you can really get immersed in Dick's narrative, Mile High, Mile Deep is a hell of a time machine.
