An Introductory Reader. Published January 1994 by Ravan Press There's no description for this book yet. Published January 1994 by Ravan Press.

The truly remarkable nature of South Africa’s transition was captured in the election and the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as the new president during the last week of April and the first week of May 1994. Contrary to widespread expectations of violence descending into chaos, the three voting days were among the most peaceful in the country’s recent history.

Dr David Webster (1 December 1944 – 1 May 1989) was an academic and anti-apartheid activist. He worked as an anthropologist at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he was a senior lecturer at the time of his assassination. Webster was a founding member of the Detainees' Parents' Support Committee (DPSC) in 1981, a founder member of the Five Freedoms Forum, and a committed comrade in the United Democratic Front

The book contains a warning and a sign of hope. Some workers become fatalistic, even xenophobic. Others are attempting to globalize their own struggles. Analyzes three distinct places –Orange, Australia; Changwon, South Korea; and Ezakheni, South Africa – and how they dealt with manufacturing plants undergoing restructuring. Explores worker responses to rising levels of insecurity and examines preconditions for the emergence of counter-movements to such insecurity.
