The Godolphin Bal Maidens book. I found this little pamphlet about women in the Cornish Mining industry at the gift shop at the abandoned Cornish mines we visited on holiday. It was a really interesting introduction to the subject. Before discovering these books I had no idea women were involved in the mining industry at all. The book did a good job explaining what jobs the women had, as well as examples from local records of different women who were involved in the industry.

Women and children were probably working at or in the mines in Devon and Cornwall from the days of antiquity, but . A Hazardous Occupation- Women and Girls of the Cornish Explosives Industries, by Lynne Mayers, published by Blaize Bailey Books.

Women and children were probably working at or in the mines in Devon and Cornwall from the days of antiquity, but the earliest written records date from the Middle Ages. From this time, at least, it seems that women and girls did not work below ground, but usually dressed ore at surface. They were employed in particularly large numbers from about 1770 until 1860. 82 pages, 153mm x 229mm paperback.

There are 19 stones in all, with a gap in the eastern section which is common to almost all British stone circles.

Mayers, Lynne (2012). Cornwall is noted for coastal scenery. A large part of the Cornubian batholith is within Cornwall; the north coast has many cliffs.

May Day (or 'Obby 'Oss Day as it is known) is the biggest day in Padstow's calendar. It is not unusual to see 30,000 people crammed into this little town on the day when Padstonians from all over the world return to their roots. The origins of the Obby Oss are numerous. Some say the celebration has its roots in pagan times, others that it's a rain maker, a fertility symbol, a deterrent to a possible landing by the French some centuries ago or perhaps a welcome to the summer.

This book gives glimpses into the life and work of the women and girls who worked at the mines on the north coast of Cornwall (between Portreath and Padstow). Female employment was widespread here, with the earliest accounts coming from the late 18th century copper mines. It continued through until the early 20th century, with the last bal maidens working at the tin mines in St Agnes. This was a significant mining area with complex mineralogy, so bal maidens dressed lead, silver, zinc, iron and clay, as well as copper and tin. In addition to describing their work, there is an assessment of the numbers of bal maidens employed, and an overview of women and girls from key mining families. There are also accounts of a six year-old bal maiden who lived to be one hundred years old, and a Portreath ore dresser who helped in the discovery of copper in Australia, as well as the tragic story of the bal maiden who died in a boiler explosion, at United Hills Mine.
