The Godolphin Bal Maidens book. I found this little pamphlet about women in the Cornish Mining industry at the gift shop at the abandoned Cornish mines we visited on holiday. It was a really interesting introduction to the subject. Before discovering these books I had no idea women were involved in the mining industry at all. The book did a good job explaining what jobs the women had, as well as examples from local records of different women who were involved in the industry.

Women and children were probably working at or in the mines in Devon and Cornwall from the days of antiquity, but the earliest written records date from the Middle Ages. From this time, at least, it seems that women and girls did not work below ground, but usually dressed ore at surface.
