I'm often asked to recommend a good, basic book on investing, and The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing has been my go-to pick since its original publication. It focuses on all the right things: the virtues of maintaining a frugal lifestyle, keeping investment costs down, and building a simple, low-maintenance portfolio. John Bogle set out to reform the mutual fund industry nearly 40 years ago. He saw a high fee, self-serving, good ol' boy network and thought it was wrong.
It summarizes much information which is found elsewhere. If you are interested in investing, go straight to the source and read Jack Bogle's Little Book of Common Sense Investing. I think of it more as a reference guide than a book to be read beginning to end. My main criticism is that it covers to much ground, and touches on subjects from investing to wills to 529 plans to insurance. As such, it lacks focus. It is almost too abmbitious in its scope. It is better written. This book could be a follow up to that book. Still, this book is worth reading and is better than 90% of investing books out there.
