The tests in this book are actually HARDER than real IQ tests, or at least the one I was given. But I feel the best use of these tests is for brain exercise. Unless you're in school or actively learning new, complex things, your brain gets into autopilot mode and starts atrophying.

A professionally administered and proctored IQ test was given as part of the process. Consistent challenges like problem solving is one of the best ways to keep you mind sharp.

If you want to prepare for an IQ test (as I am currently doing), then this has tests that may not be representative of the real thing but are good to keep your brain limber nonetheless.

There seem to be a lot of things: Pattern detection. Raven's progressive matrices. Word analogies. This could work out such that you could do 25 days of study at the rate of one test per day and go into the IQ test nice and ready. Other things, like the vocabulary testing are built up over many years of study and can't be learned so easily.

I don't recommend buying this book on Kindle. When you want to go back and check your answers, the "flipping" back and forth can become very tedious. The price differential is minimal and you can have the benefit of something that you can put in your hands (with all the technology, good old fashioned books are still the best way for some things).

Tentative verdict (as regards the value for the IQ test): This seems like what an IQ test would be like. In that sense, it was worth $12.

UPDATED VERDICT (2/14/2013- Test Result, FSIQ= 141) AS PREPARATION FOR AN IQ TEST (WAIS-III): This book is not sufficient. The vocabulary on the test was actually much simpler than on here and the exercises had no resemblace to what I found on the test. The Wechsler had 14 parts and some/ most of them were completely absent from this book (block assembly/ picture sequencing/ "what's missing" pictures/ symbol search/ symbol coding/ digit span/ reverse digit span).

Verdict as a brain exerciser: It is worth the money. Best bought as a paper book.

This book comes with ample practice tests. There's 40 questions in each one test supplied with answers and explanations at the back. Questions are more difficult than those you will find in most iq test. If you put into the effort to do these practice test I think there's probably no real test that would be too difficult for you.

If you're looking to exercise your brain, these tests will certainly stimulate and strengthen your noodle and result in improved brain function and longevity - the medical community is in consensus with this. But, if you're trying to see what your IQ is, these tests might not be the most representative. The tests in this book are actually HARDER than real IQ tests, or at least the one I was given.

Several years ago, a former employer sent me with a group of employees, all part of a management training program, to take a series of tests and evaluations. A professionally administered and proctored IQ test was given as part of the process. The main difference between the tests in this book and the REAL IQ test was that the ladder was multiple choice and the tests in this book have many questions that require a written answer that doesn't allow for guessing. This in fact makes the tests in this book more difficult than a standardized IQ test.

These tests are challenging, to say the least. But after you've done a few, you'll better understand the logic that goes into conceiving the questions and your scores will improve.

I'm contemplating applying for membership into MENSA and I am confident that doing these practice tests will significantly improve my entry score compared to if I went in cold.

But I feel the best use of these tests is for brain exercise. Unless you're in school or actively learning new, complex things, your brain gets into autopilot mode and starts atrophying. Consistent challenges like problem solving is one of the best ways to keep you mind sharp.

I buy all the IQ books of Phillip Carter, because my gifted students are addicted to them. One or two pages every day, or they start grumbling. It doesn't matter what grade they are in, either; they all get sharp as razors using these books. Heaven only knows how the kids will survive without them when they graduate. My only complaint is that the book disappeared, and now I shall have to buy another.

Haven't looked through it all that much, but I must say that from what I have seen so far, it is PACKED with content!

Keeps you on your toes.

i dont care what my iq is, but whats fascinating here is that you've got a vast invoentory of ways to twist and contort the mind. Good bedtime reading.

Very pleased with the book and plan to continue using it regularly. I like the variety of questions.
