The fascinating aspect of Too Many Bosses, Too Few Leaders is that it is much less a 'how to' and much more a 'why' exploration of leadership, going deeply into the subject in a manner I have not seen before. Instead of preaching on the topic, as most of the other books do, he takes readers along a personal journey on a quest for leadership, uncovering the key elements of character, fortitude, processes and practices that will enable them to discover the leadership in themselves. The three leadership activities which provide the most leverage to an organisation are

BOSSES, TOO FEW LEADERS The Three Essential Principles You Need to Become an Extraordinary Leader. Sean Runnette’s delivery of these passages, in particular, shows that he was a wise choice to narrate this work.

TOO MANY BOSSES, TOO FEW LEADERS The Three Essential Principles You Need to Become an Extraordinary Leader. by Rajeev Peshawaria Read by Sean Runnette. He evokes both gentleness and strength as the text moves between discussions of leaders throughout history and business leaders in management positions of corporations today. Particularly sensitive in his delivery of the rhetorical questions at the start of the chapters, Runnette honors the author’s intent to draw the listener in.

The Three Essential Principles You Need to Become an Extraordinary Leader . by Rajeev Peshawaria. As chief learning officer for more than 20 years at companies like Morgan Stanley and Coca-Cola, the author knows that fortune should not be the driving force behind a vision. Much of the book examines leaders of large organizations, like former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack, who, despite bad publicity, pressure from regulators and fears of a global economic meltdown, boldly refused to sell to JPMorgan when the jobs of his 45,000 employees were at stake. Small businesses can also can benefit from Peshawaria’s motivational concepts.

Bosses, Too Few Leaders: The Three Essential Principles You Need to Become an Extraordinary Leader. Great leaders exert massive amounts of energy, according to Peshawaria, and his three key principles thus center on energy.

I bring this up because of the uncanny alignment between this view and the way author Rajeev Peshawaria presents his views on leadership in his new book Too Many Bosses, Too Few Leaders: The Three Essential Principles You Need to Become an Extraordinary Leader. Perhaps I shouldn't be so surprised, as Peshawaria was also a founder of two high-profile corporate universities: Morgan Stanley University and Coca-Cola University. Energize yourself by clearly defining your purpose and values.

CEO of ICLIF Leadership & Governance Centre, and author Too Many Bosses, Too Few Leaders, Rajeev Peshawaria describes the lack of great leaders in today's corporations. Rajeev points out that many programs and individuals focus on how managers can motivate employees. Instead, he makes the statement that employees can't be motivated by managers. They must be self-motivated.

How did Alan Mulally-an outsider to the auto industry-lead such a spectacular turnaround at Ford? How did Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack keep his company from imploding even as Lehman Brothers collapsed? What is it that enables such extraordinary leaders to galvanize their talents and energy, as well as the talents and energy of those who work for them, to achieve superior performance no matter what challenges they face?Rajeev Peshawaria has spent more than twenty years working alongside top executives at Fortune 500 companies and training them in leadership. He knows precisely what makes the difference between those who are simply bosses and those who are superior leaders, and between those who continue to rise to the top levels and those who get stuck along the way.In this lively and remarkably empowering book, Peshawaria offers readers the opportunity to experience the highest level of leadership training available in the world. Introducing the three core principles he has observed are the foundation of the best leadership-that great leaders clearly define their purpose and values; that nobody can motivate another person because everyone comes premotivated; and that a leader's job is not to directly produce results but to create the conditions that will harness the energy of others-he details his unique and proven program for achieving leadership excellence.Sharing a wealth of illuminating stories, from those of Mulally's achievement at Ford and Mack's at Morgan Stanley, to how Harvey Golub and Ken Chenault successfully restored American Express to long-term sustainable growth, how Neville Isdell turned the Coca-Cola company around, and the continuing prowess of Jeff Bezos in growing Amazon.com, he first reveals how extraordinary leaders marshal and sustain the level of energy in themselves that is required and how they enlist a core group of proficient co-leaders. He then outlines how to harness the energy and talents of those at all levels of an organization, igniting their motivation by following his guidelines for addressing their core needs. Finally, he introduces his unique Brains, Bones, and Nerves framework for developing a clear strategy for competitive advantage (the Brains); crafting an optimal organizational structure (the Bones); and fostering a highly cooperative and motivated company culture (the Nerves).Filled with specific tips about the vital questions to ask and simple but powerful steps to follow, Too Many Bosses, Too Few Leaders is a manager's essential tool kit for long-term superior performance.

Leadership is not about competency models, personality traits or formulas - it is about having the lasting energy to stay true to your vision for positive change even in the face of the most powerful resistance, according to Rajeev Peshawaria in this book. Superior leadership requires incredible amounts of emotional energy.

The three core principles of leadership proposed by the author are:

* Staying focused comes from maintaining your personal energy, and sustaining energy comes only from a clear understanding of your purpose and your values.
* To enlist and energise other key influencers, you need to understand and meet their expectations about their Role, Environment and Development.
* As a leader your job is to galvanise the energy of others to facilitate sustainable collective success.

The three leadership activities which provide the most leverage to an organisation are:

* Brains: Setting direction, with a compelling vision and clearly differentiated strategy
* Bones: Designing the organisation, with top quality talent, supporting systems and structures
* Nerves: Creating a culture of excellence, with compensation aligned with cultural philosophy and teamwork

In my opinion this is an outstanding leadership book. Many leadership books identify the attributes and activities of a leader, but this book identifies a key ingredient which is often missing from textbook analyses: the importance of the energy emanating from the leader and how to cultivate it. The anecdotes related by the author make the book enjoyable to read, and I would recommend it to anyone who holds or aspires to a senior leadership position in an organisation.

Arcanefire
Love this book. Very informative

Jogas
One of the best books I have read on leadership.

The examples given are very inspirational. It is also a book that gets you to think about how you lead yourself first prior to leading others.

Authis
It is a good book.

Der Bat
It's actually more than the title suggests. Some will start to read it and probably decide "it's not what I wanted" but I would challenge that to say "it's probably what you need."

My background is corporate then small business. This books nails it for both areas of life.

Brains, Bones and Nerves is one of the best frameworks I have even seen. This book is a gem.
