He has never been to school, heard of holidays or even used a phone. He believes he deserves this because he has been bad.

The Boy from the Basement is a young adult book by Susan Shaw published in 2004. He has no idea what the outside world is like. Charlie has to scavenge for food when his psychotic father goes to sleep, and he must go to the bathroom in the yard. His father brainwashed him into thinking that he deserves the abuse.

Susan Shaw mastered the art of characterization by adding new characters to the book. Charlie is 12 and he cannot read The Boy From the Basement tells the story of a boy named Charlie who is horrendously abused by his father. Unlike other books, every few pages a new character is introduced, although these characters may not become main, I do like the style. She is also very creative. He is kept so isolated from the world around him that when he finally has a taste of freedom he is TERRIFIED of it due to the lies he was told about how unsafe it is beyond the confines of the concrete basement he has been locked in for years.
