Through the Looking Glass book. Carroll's classic stories reunited with Peake's celebrated illustrations, restored for the first time to their original glory. In the 1940s, Gormenghast trilogy author Mervyn Peake was commissioned to produce a series of seventy pen-and-ink drawings to accompany Lewis Carroll's two classics, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.

Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There. Lewis Carroll was born as Charles Lutwidge Dodgson on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire, England, the eldest son of eleven children raised in a devout English household. He had an inquisitive mind, and his early poems, plays, and paintings display the genius that characterizes his mature works; he seems to have had a happy childhood.
Mervyn Peake (1911-68) was an artist and writer. Since Alice can seem quite a daunting book to the target-aged independent reader, I love the idea of publishing 'Alice' in a boxed set of 22 miniature hardcover volumes. As a novelist, he is best known for his Gormenghast trilogy. Imagine a fancy shoebox of sturdy, tiny Alice books on your child's shelf at home, or second-graders racing each other for the next volume at school! Unfortunately, Oxenbury's illustrations practically ruin the story. The modernization of Alice wasn't the big issue for me.
Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There" is the sequel to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", and is likewise a humoristic nonsense story for children of all ages, written by Lewis Carroll (pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) and first published in 1871. In this book Alice meets the Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the White and Red Queens, Humpty Dumpty, and the White Knight. The book contains the nonsense verse of the Jabberwock and the Walrus and the Carpenter.

CHAPTER 1 Looking-Glass house. One thing was certain, that the WHITE kitten had had nothing to do with it: - it was the black kitten's fault entirely. For the white kitten had been having its face washed by the old cat for the last quarter of an hour (and bearing it pretty well, considering); so you see that it COULDN'T have had any hand in the mischief. Do you know, I think if you sat up and folded your arms, you'd look exactly like her. Now do try, there's a dear! - And Alice got the Red Queen off the table, and set it up before the kitten as a model for it to imitate: however, the thing didn't succeed, principally, Alice said, because the kitten wouldn't fold its arms properly.
